The Brit heads into the fight of his life against pound-for-pound star Canelo as a huge underdog, but former multi-weight world champion Jones Jr believes he has the style to win and has compared his ring skills to Floyd Mayweather.
Canelo, whose only ever defeat came against Mayweather, has historically struggled against southpaws who box and move like Saunders, but is still expected to win on Saturday before going on to fight IBF champion Caleb Plant for the undisputed championship.
Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders collide in a blockbuster fight this Saturday night
The Mexican puts his WBC and WBA titles on the line while Saunders’ WBO is also up for grabs
The Mexican sensation comes into the clash as the more active fighter, having fought three times in the last five months compared to Saunders’ two fights in three years.
Jones Jr, who is now training Saunders’ rival Chris Eubank Jr, said Britian’s WBO champion has the capabilities to make it an awkward night for Canelo but admitted he could get ‘blown away’ if ring rust transpires to be a problem.
‘I give Billy Joe a really good chance,’ Jones told iFL TV when asked for his fight prediction.
‘The reason being is because if you think about Canelo Alvarez, the toughest two fights he’s had in his career to me were Floyd Mayweather Jr, who’s a pure boxer, and a southpaw by the name of Erislandy Lara, who was a boxer too.
Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr believes Saunders has the capabilities to cause Canelo problems
He even compared Saunders’ ring skills to Floyd Mayweather, the only man to defeat Canelo
‘So if you think about those two guys… who’s Billy Joe closely related to in the boxing ring? Those two guys. He’s a boxer, he’s southpaw, and he can punch, but he thinks boxing first, much like Tyson Fury.
‘When you got a guy like that, the only problem Billy Joe’s going to have is, can he last long enough early to get to those late rounds without sustaining any injuries, cuts, headbutts, anything.
‘He has to figure out how to make up for that ring rust before he gets in there, because if he can get into the fight right away, he has a very good chance of winning it.
‘If he doesn’t get into the fight right away, then he’ll get blown away, but he’s a very smart guy, he’s a boxer, he’s a smart boxer. With that being said, he should have a chance in this fight.’
