The Red Devils finally banished their semi-final hoodoo under Solskjaer by completing a 8-5 victory on aggregate over Roma on Thursday night, despite losing the second leg 3-2 in Rome.
United will face Spanish side Villarreal in the final in Gdansk later this month after they beat Arsenal 2-1 over two legs.
Captain Harry Maguire says Manchester United ‘have got to win’ the Europa League
And Maguire wants to lift his first trophy at the club.
He said: ‘It’s a great achievement. Obviously we didn’t win the game tonight so that is disappointing but we did the hard work in the first leg and we put ourselves in a great position. We knew tonight that we needed to start the first half well and we started the game a bit edgy. They actually played a man-to-man pressing style.
‘It made the game end to end like basketball. We got a good result at half time but the second half we gave them too man chances to be honest. We need to improve for the final but it’s a great achievement.
Edinson Cavani put in another stellar performance as United progressed to the final
‘Obviously we don’t want to lose any football match. We came into it tonight wanting to win the game. We put ourselves in a great position in the first leg and credit to the boys, we obviously won’t celebrate tonight but we will congratulate ourselves for overcoming the semi-final stage and making it to the final of a competition that we have to go and win.’
Edinson Cavani scored both United goals to seal their passage although they were thankful to goalkeeper David De Gea for a series of stops.
Maguire added: ‘Edison scored two great goals. His movement and his work rate were great. Without the ball he was excellent. He always offers us that. His second goal was typical of him and what he has done throughout his career. He is a top player and he is a top player for us.
‘As for David, as a central player I am not too pleased about how much he has had to do – I would much prefer him not to make a save. But when we needed him tonight he was there and pulled off big saves. That’s what he has done throughout his career.’
For a spell in the second half United appeared to be rocked by Roma’s quick-fire goals
