Lewis Hamilton WINS the Portuguese Grand Prix to extend his lead over Red Bull’s Max Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton won the Portuguese Grand Prix, coming from second on the grid to open up his lead at the top of the drivers’ championship to eight points.

The seven-time world champion made two impressive overtaking moves: first, a revenge pass on Max Verstappen, who had just zipped by him cleanly on the outside of Turn 1 – the place where most of the action unfolded in the Algarve.

Hamilton then went around the outside of Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas, the pole-sitter, on lap 20 of 66 to take the lead. Now in clean air, Hamilton put his foot down and opened up a gap he never looked like surrendering.

After the one round of pit stops, the Briton came out with a decent lead over Verstappen, who had just passed Bottas for second place.

That is how it finished – Hamilton, Verstappen, Bottas – the top three way out on their own.

Red Bull’s No 2 Sergio Perez finished fourth, a place ahead of Lando Norris, who kept up his brilliant form for McLaren, finishing fifth. He is showing a real step-up in performance this season and is still just 21. His team-mate Daniel Ricciardo came from 16th on the grid to finish ninth.

Kimi Raikkonen had caused early drama when he lackadaisically drove into the back of the other Alfa Romeo, that of Antonio Giovinazzi, on the start-finish straight. The Finn buckled his front wing and headed into the gravel at the beginning of lap two, a prang that brought out the safety car.

It was at the restart that Verstappen made his early move on Hamilton, which was reversed four laps later. Hamilton, only briefly lying third, went around through the inside and kept his elbows out as the Dutchman tried to wrest back the initiative at the fourth corner. It was fair but hard.

Then came his decisive move on Bottas – the moment that clinched Hamilton’s second win from the opening three races – when the Finn boxed himself in on the inside of the first corner.

Verstappen came in for new soft tyres in the dying embers of the race and duly scored the fastest lap to keep him as close to Hamilton in the standings as possible.
