Dad always said how lucky he was throughout his career not only to play with great footballers, but also with great people and great friends.
He has known Ian since they were teenagers. They played against each other as great rivals and their partnership on screen was part of a huge resurgence for Dad after his playing career ended.
Gary Newbon launched Dad into television and had the idea of bringing them together for Saint and Greavsie. They hit it off from the word go.
Saint and Greavsie was a TV show with former players Ian St John and Jimmy Greaves
Ian was an iconic star of Bill Shankly’s legendary Liverpool team, representing the North and blessed with a dry Scottish wit. Dad was from London, playing the prime of his career at Tottenham, the best team in the South, and had a quickfire Cockney sense of humour.
More than anything, Dad and Ian were great pals. They were genuinely fond of each other and had great respect for each other and that’s what gave the show its unique chemistry. To them, it was never work.
The pair hit it off from the word go after meeting and went on to form a great relationship
Greaves and St John quickly became fan favourites during their time together on the screen
It was a couple of ex-football players getting together to have fun and talk about the game they loved.
They have stayed in touch ever since and, even though they have both been in poor health in recent years, the two families have always been in regular contact and the two men always wanted to know how the other was getting along.
Dad is very upset to hear Ian has passed away. It is a sad day and our thoughts and best wishes are with his family.
