And the blue light responders were astonished to find a huge void slap-bang in the middle of Martens Avenue, Bexleyheath.

One unfortunate biker who didn’t spot the hole in time attempted to jump over it – before plunging into the pit, Kent Online reports.

Mike Stevens, who lives nearby, told the paper he was driving home when he noticed the road had been torn in two.

“When I turned into the road I thought, ‘What the hell?’,” said Mr Stevens.

“Thankfully I stopped and parked up. While I was doing this a motorcycle whizzes past.

“Obviously he didn’t see the hole.

“He tried to jump it but the bike ended up in the hole. The guy then ran away.”

He joked the biker “must have thought he was Evel Knievel or something”.

“He fell into it with this big bike, then got out and started shouting, ‘I need a taxi, I need a taxi’ and then ran off,” Mr Stevens added.

Another neighbour said he dashed out after hearing a “crash”.

Mark Joynes, 38, said: “About 9pm I heard a massive crash bang and looked out the window and there was a massive hole in the road.

“It was completely out of the blue.

“I had driven over it just a couple of hours ago so thankfully no one was hurt.”

Rian Bond, 44, said: “At around 9pm we heard what we thought was thunder.

“Then my son said there was police tape out the front.

“The police said we might need to evacuate.

“When we heard the crash we thought it was someone taking their bins out.”

It’s not yet known what has caused the void to open, and investigations into the cause continue this morning.

The sinkhole is believed to be at least 16ft deep.

It spans the entire width of the road.

Police immediately cordoned off the entire stretch to keep people safe.

Officers also remained at the scene throughout the night.

Engineers from Thames Water have now put barriers up around the hole as they investigate.
